The recent addition of work for the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. wasn’t enough to prevent layoffs at Northlich, Cincinnati’s largest shop.

The agency let go 20 employees, about 13 percent of its staff of 150.

“We held out as far as we could, but in the end we had to make the cuts,” said Julia Arosteguy, Northlich’s vice president, group supervisor.

Northlich put its planned acquisition of Bridge Communications on hold [Adweek, April 9]. That deal would have created a single agency with nearly $200 million in billings.

Further layoffs are not expected, partly because of the agency’s recent win of Velaments from Amurol Confections, a unit of Wrigley.

“Our new business with Velamints is going to help us wade through these harsh times,” Arosteguy said.
