USVI’s PR in Play, Ad Account on Deck

ATLANTA The public relations account of the U.S. Virgin Islands is in review, sources said.

Slay Public Relations, a unit of Interpublic Group’s The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va., has handled PR for the Caribbean destination for 10 years and will defend, the shop said.

A review for USVI’s advertising account, currently at J. Walter Thompson in Atlanta, is expected to begin next month, sources said. JWT has held the account since 2000, when incumbent Ogilvy & Mather shuttered its Atlanta office.

USVI’s advertising spending in 2002 amounted to $7 million, per TNS Media Intelligence/CMR. The client spent only $1 million in first-quarter 2003. Fees for the PR account are undisclosed.

Officials from the USVI tourism office did not return calls.
