QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Do You Have a Hobby?
For many of us, the word “hobby” evokes the Norman Rockwellesque image of a grandfatherly fellow in his garage, happily turning out useless objects by means of an elaborate set of woodworking tools. Surely the pursuit of a hobby belongs to a more leisurely way of life than the one we experience nowadays. In the age of the careerist, terrorist and activist, one could easily suppose the hobbyist to be a vanishing breed. But one would suppose wrong. In a nationwide survey conducted for Adweek, 74.5 percent of respondents answered affirmatively when asked whether they have a hobby. And the youngest respondents were just a bit less likely than the oldest to answer “yes.” While 75 percent of those age 45-55 affirmed that they have a hobby, so did 72 percent of the 18-24-year-olds. Hobbyism was most endemic among the 25-34-year-olds (82 percent), with the 35-44 cohort (73 percent) coming in closer to the survey’s overall average. Men were more likely than women to say they have a hobby (78 percent versus 71 percent), but one suspects this gender gap is smaller than it was in bygone days when women weren’t expected to have time on their hands for personal avocations.

The market for jobs in advertising, marketing and the media has entered the summer doldrums, judging by the volume of help-wanted ads running in Adweek. Nothing remarkable in this except for the fact that the market somehow made it through the previous two summers without such a slump.

Who does the prescribing when it comes to prescription drugs? Depends on the gender of the patient. A study by HMC Consumer, a New York-based unit of Omnicom, finds women “twice as likely as men to request a specific brand of prescription medicine from their doctor.” HMC suggests this is because so much of the advertising aims at women. But doctors don’t necessarily go along with their patients’ notions. Men who request a specific drug are more likely to get it than women are, the study finds.
