Sweep Spoils: CBS, Viewers, NBC, Demos

With three nights to go, CBS and NBC claimed victory Monday in the May sweep (April 26-May 23) in total viewers and the adults 18-49 demographic, respectively.

A “Survivor”-boosted CBS has averaged 12.7 million viewers during the May book through Sunday, while NBC has pulled a 5.0 rating/14 share in adults 18-49.

The peacock also is assured of a first-place finish for the 2000-01 season in the key 18-49 demo (4.8/13), but CBS is in a near dead-heat with ABC for the season total viewers crown.

For the season through Sunday, CBS was averaging 12.53 million viewers to ABC’s 12.50 million.

Fox and ABC are in a tight race to finish the season in the No. 2 spot in 18-49 (Fox’s 4.5/12 to ABC’s 4.4/12), as Fox has posted 7% growth over the 1999-2000 season, while ABC’s numbers headed south in a hurry after it won outright in 1999-2000.

Among the baby networks, the WB Network is looking at double-digit growth for the season in adults 18-34 and adults 18-49 over 1999-2000, but UPN and the WB are down by more than 15% in the teen demo.
