Society may shun the odd, but Errol Morris embraces it, stripping away peculiarities with his camera. “I like trying to find the universal in strange places,” says the 49-year-old documentarist. His latest film, Fast, Cheap & Out of Control, tells the tales of a topiary gardener, a lion tamer, a robotics scientist and an expert on mole rats. “We see ourselves in them by the end of the movie,” says Morris, represented by for commercials. “In all of these stories, there is a presentation of life and life forms.” Morris’ advertising work is life-affirming, too. His most recent ads for the Massachusetts Dept. of Health offer an important message—stop smoking.
