Snapple Moves to Cliff Freeman

NEW YORK MDC Partners’ Cliff Freeman and Partners has added creative chores on Cadbury Schweppes’ Snapple account without a review, the client has confirmed. Estimated billings are $10-15 million.

The brand’s advertising had been at Interpublic Group’s Deutsch in New York since 1997. Deutsch retains public relations duties for the brand.

The move arises from what sources said was a prior familiarity with Cliff Freeman by Cadbury Schweppes’ new executive vice president of marketing, Randy Gier, who joined the company in March from Yum! Brands, where he helmed marketing for Pizza Hut. Cliff Freeman had once pitched ideas on that account, which remains at Omnicom Group’s BBDO in New York.

Sources, however, said Gier liked the agency, and last month had invited Freeman to submit ideas on its 7Up brand [Adweek, April 26], now at WPP Group’s Young & Rubicam in New York. It could not immediately be determined if Cliff Freeman is still pitching ideas on 7Up.

In addition to Snapple and 7Up, Gier, 43, oversees about a dozen brands, including Dr Pepper and Hawaiian Punch.

New York-based Cliff Freeman’s experience in the category includes Coca-Cola Classic, Fanta and Cherry Coke.

This marks the second account loss this year for Deutsch. Its Marina del Rey, Calif., office lost the $100 million-plus DirecTV account earlier this year without a review to BBDO in New York.

Cadbury Schweppes has its U.S. headquarters in Plano, Texas.
