Ex-TBWA/C/D Media Exec Returns Home
SAN FRANCISCO–Less than two years after returning to TBWA/Chiat/Day, director of media strategy and managing partner Fred Sattler has again left the fold and is returning to his home state of Michigan.
Sattler, 43, will be evp and executive media director for Doner, Southfield, Mich., a new post.
Doner has billings of more than $1 billion and clients such as BP Amoco and Mazda North American Operations. The agency is restructuring the way it handles media.
Sattler is charged with helping to centralize the process from the shop’s headquarters rather than have each individual Doner office handle media planning and buying.
“The growth of our agency has created new opportunities in the area of media planning and buying that demands someone of Fred’s talents, stature and experience to lead our efforts,” said Doner chairman and chief executive officer Alan Kalter.
According to sources, Sattler’s decision to leave TBWA/C/D, San Francisco, was also prompted, in part, by the high cost of living in the Bay Area, as well as Sattler’s desire to be closer to family members living in Michigan.
It is uncertain what effect Sattler’s leaving will ultimately have on TBWA/C/D’s Levi’s jeans business, but sources said he has been instrumental in guiding media strategy for the brand.
After an 11-month stint at the former Leap Partnership, Los Angeles, Sattler returned to TBWA/C/D in early 1998. His arrival coincided with the agency’s win of the Levi’s business. Sources said Sattler’s media strategy abilities have helped to pacify Levi Strauss & Co. executives, who have been unhappy with most of the agency’s creative efforts.
A TBWA/C/D representative said a replacement for Sattler has not yet been named.
