R/GA Hires Nokia Account Lead

NEW YORK R/GA has brought in Spencer McHugh, a former marketing executive at United Kingdom mobile provider Orange, to lead its Nokia account.

McHugh, 34, has joined the interactive shop as a director of client services for R/GA in London. R/GA opened its London outpost following its win of Nokia’s interactive duties for the N Series, including strategy, site development and online advertising.

McHugh is the agency’s fourth employee in London, where R/GA is using space at fellow Interpublic Group shop Lowe. He will hire additional employees to work on the Nokia account, and R/GA expects to have 20 staffers in London by the middle of the year in a separate office from Lowe, according to the agency.

Prior to R/GA, McHugh spent three years at Orange, where he was head of direct marketing and new media, handling the company’s below-the-line strategy for the consumer and small-business segments. From 2000 to the end of 2002, he worked at MBO, where he was a planning director for accounts including Jeep, Britannia Music and the Accident Group.

R/GA’s London presence is its first foray abroad since it closed a small office in Stockholm, Sweden, when it lost the Ericsson account in 2001.

An earlier version of this story stated McHugh joined as an executive vice president of client services. He is a director of client services.
