Republik Installs Smith as CD

The Republik has recruited David Smith as creative director.

Smith, 37, was previously a creative director and senior partner at J. Walter Thompson in New York, where he worked on the Bermuda Department of Tourism, Lipton Brisk, Smirnoff Ice and Hall’s cough drops accounts under group creative director J.J. Jordan.

Smith, who led JWT’s successful pitch against 32 competing agencies for the Bermuda Tourism business, was fired from that agency in 2001 when chief creative officer Mike Campbell arrived from BBDO.

“I wasn’t qualified, but when J.J. left, I jumped on the [group cd] opportunity,” Smith said. “It was the greatest learning experience I had.”

Smith’s résumé also includes stints at Ammirati & Puris and BBDO, both in New York, and Cole & Weber in Seattle. Most recently, he worked in Prague for West Media, helping establish creative departments in offices across the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

At Republik, a small shop in Chapel Hill, N.C., Smith will work with partners Robert West, Brian Murray, Scott Pridgeon, Francis George and Troy Livingston.

“He’s involved to grow the organization through his national relationships,” said West, who opened the agency eight months ago.
