NEW YORK The Kaplan Thaler Group was awarded the creative portion of Ruby Tuesday’s advertising account, an agency representative said.

Kaplan Thaler’s sister Publicis shop, MediaVest USA, also in New York, was handed the Maryville, Tenn.-based restaurant chain’s media buying and planning duties following a review against undisclosed agencies.

Annual billings were not disclosed.

The review is the start of a national branding effort by Ruby Tuesday, which operates 600 quick-service restaurants across the country, sources said. The chain has done little advertising in the past, but wants to compete more aggressively with other restaurants such as Applebees, Olive Garden and TGI Friday’s, which spend between $30 million and $60 million annually, per CMR.
