Poo-Pourri Adds Another Redhead as It Tweaks Its Holiday Advertising

JP Sears joins Bethany Woodruff on the commode

It’s the holiday gift that doesn’t stink.

That message wafts through before-you-poop bathroom spray Poo-Pourri’s new seasonal video. Clocking in at five minutes, and flush with the brand’s trademark scatological silliness, this outing boasts the return of posh-accented pitch-gal Bethany Woodruff and introduces potty-head hippie satirist JP Sears to the Poo-Pourri family.

Perched in a yoga pose atop the toilet, Sears kicks off the festivities by musing, “I love the holidays. I love my family. I love spending money on gifts they’ll hate.”

As he mulls gift options for his near and dear (“How do I shop for these strangers I’m forced to love?”), Woodruff pops into the scene—sitting across from Sears on a commode of her own, naturally—and proceeds to portray Poo-Pourri as an affordable source of good tidings for all.

“We want to reach people who are sick of wasting money and time on gifts people will never use,” says Nicole Story, Poo-Pourri’s vice president of creative, who also directed the spot. “Literally everyone on your Christmas list can use Poo-Pourri every day—sometimes twice a day. And as more and more holiday shopping happens online, digital is the ideal place to catch them in the middle of the burdensome act.”

Woodruff’s faux fabulousness plays well against Sears’ dry dippy schtick as the they spin tales of Christmases past and skewer yuletide tropes such as “outgifting” competitions to win relatives’ affection and being forced to model ill-fitting outfits knitted by Nana.

“We loved the idea of bringing these two redheaded powerhouses together and the juxtaposition of their acting styles,” says Story.

Of course, Poo-Pourri has squeezed out holiday humor before, most famously in this 2014 spot with Saint Nick “dropping yule logs down his chimney.” And its 2016 year-end spot, while not overtly Christmas-themed, took viewers on a memorably crappy trip through the “annals of history.”

This latest installment, from the brand’s in-house agency No. 2 Productions, feels broader and more overtly sitcom-y, though it’s still plenty subversive enough to make a big, loud splash.

Story says the approach represents “a bit of a departure for us, in the sense that we’re presenting Poo-Pourri as a solution to a gifting problem, instead of just a smell problem. For the first time in a video, we’re asking consumers to buy Poo-Pourri for others, not themselves. It will be exciting to see how viewers connect with that.”
