Papa John’s Issues RFPs

ATLANTA–Papa John’s Pizza has issued requests for proposal for the creative portion of its account.

The Louisville, Ky., chain parted with incumbent Fricks/Firestone two months ago, according to Chris Jacobsen, senior director of marketing communications for the client. The Atlanta shop has not been invited to defend the account, which it won in 1997. It will continue to handle some creative duties for Papa John’s Atlanta franchise co-ops.

Twenty to thirty rfps were mailed to agencies last week. Jacobsen said a cut to twelve semi-finalists will be made in mid-January. Four finalists will be issued creative assignments for presentations in February.

“The initial search is a broad brush across the states,” said Jacobsen. “We’re looking at a range of agencies with experience in TV, radio and national promotion concepts in the food service arena,” he said, adding that the review is closed.

Media spending on the account was $47 million in 2000 and $37 million for January-September, 2001, per CMR. The creative budget is expected to exceed
$5 million.

A decision will be made by the end of March. There is no consultant.
