Commercials that somehow relate to the TV shows they sponsor aren’t new. But when viewers in New Orleans tuned into the March 3 20/20 interview between Barbara Walters and Monica Lewinsky, they were treated to another Monica in an ad break leading into the show.
A local political spot for congressional candidate Monica Monica–yes, Monica Monica–aired on WGNO-TV, Channel 26, although it seems that wasn’t the plan.
The Monica campaign–she’s seeking the vacated seat of former Republican Speaker of the House Bob Livingston–has been buying spots during network news shows. Campaign personnel claim they were unaware that one of her spots made the two-hour Walters-Lewinsky gabfest, even though WGNO sales execs said they were targeting politicians for the show.
Monica press secretary Leslie Carde admitted her candidate has benefitted from a wave of publicity, including a recent profile in People magazine.
But the joke has worn thin. Carde said Monica Monica is now refusing out-of-town interviews regarding her name. –Janet Plum
