Omnicom vs. IPG Shops for Pennzoil

DALLAS Pennzoil Motor Oil has narrowed its review to three finalists, sources said.

Agencies still competing for the creative portion of the $30 million account are Omnicom’s TBWA\Chiat\Day, Playa del Rey, Calif., and the Interpublic Group’s Deutsch/LA, Marina del Rey, Calif., and The Martin Agency, Richmond, Va., sources said.

Five agencies were cut following last week’s agency visits. They are incumbent GSD&M, Austin, Texas, and Omnicom sibling Merkley Newman Harty & Partners, New York; independents The Richards Group, Dallas, and Doner, Southfield, Mich.; and WPP Group’s J. Walter Thompson, New York, sources said.

Briefings will take place at Pennzoil’s Houston headquarters this week, according to sources.

GSD&M handles Pennzoil’s media planning and buying, which are not part of the review.

Roth Associates in New York is conducting the review for the Houston-based client. The consultancy could not be reached for comment.

The agencies either declined comment or could not be reached.
