NYC Appoints Marketing Chief

NEW YORK The City of New York has a new chief marketing officer.

Maureen Reidy, who had been president of NYC Big Events, will take over the duties of Joe Perello, who left to join the private sector in May. Reidy’s new role is effective immediately, a representative at NYC Big Events said today.

The move is part of an overhaul of the city’s tourism and marketing offices, spearheaded by a mayoral initiative to combine three separate marketing entities: NYC & Company, NYC Big Events and NYC Marketing.

The new office, which has yet to be named, will by headed up by agency executive George Fertitta, who will create a corporate identity and organizational structure. The work, done in conjunction with Reidy and Christyne Nicholas, president of NYC & Company, is expected to be completed by early fall, the mayor’s office said in a statement.

Fertitta had been chairman and founder of Margeotes Fertitta Powell, a marketing and advertising agency in New York.

Reidy said the move would make New York’s promotional efforts more efficient as the city heads into a busy fall season, when it will play host to the MTV Music Awards in August, a VH1 Hip-Hop Honors ceremony in September and the Latin Grammys in November.

She added that the city would “continue to move forward” with its existing partnerships with Snapple and the History Channel, and is expected to announce a new alliance with an overnight delivery service in the fall.

Also on the table are bids to host the 2008 Republican and Democratic national conventions, Reidy said.

“We haven’t left the office before midnight all week,” she joked.

Over 100 people are currently employed by the three marketing offices, which have a combined annual budget of more than $22 million, the mayor’s office said. No employee layoffs were expected.

“We don’t forsee overlap,” said Paul Elliott, deputy press secretary for Mayor Bloomberg.

“No other city has the array of proven professionals that New York has assembled under one roof,” Elliott added. “This is a new model for tourism and marketing.”
