Subway Selects Partners & Shevack
BOSTON–Subway Restaurants in Milford, Conn., has awarded media buying and planning duties for its Hartford/New Haven, Conn., franchisees to Partners & Shevack in New York. The media-only account, with estimated billings of $600,000, was placed in review in March. Partners & Shevack prevailed over four other contenders, including the incumbent, General Media Services in Westport, Conn.
TN Reports First Quarter Gains
CHICAGO–True North Communications here reported revenues for its first quarter, ended March 31, of $131 million, a 23 percent increase over the same period in 1996. Net income was $215,000, versus a net loss of $722,000 a year earlier. Chairman Bruce Mason attributed the gains to new business won during the fourth quarter of last year, including multinational assignments from Tambrands, Kimberly-Clark, Cadbury and others.
Leap Chairman Increases Holdings
CHICAGO–R. Steven Lutterbach, chairman and chief executive officer of The Leap Group here–parent of agency The Leap Partnership–increased his ownership in the publicly traded company with the purchase of 1 million shares of Leap’s common stock from Joe Sciarrota, Leap co-founder, executive vice president and chief creative officer. Lutterbach currently owns 3.4 million shares of The Leap Group’s stock–which closed at $4 on the day the sale was announced–while Sciarrota retained 1.3 million shares.
CRI Reviews $100 Mil. Account
ATLANTA–After months of anticipation, the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) in Dalton, Ga., has sent out questionnaires for its estimated $100 million (over four years) ad account. CRI director of marketing Dick Corelitz declined to identify the shops contacted other than report the number was less than 10. He referred to them as ‘large, full-service, national agencies.’ CRI officials revealed their intentions to fund an effort to promote the carpet industry last fall.
Burke to DDB, Personnel Shifts at Hill, Holliday
NEW YORK–Paula Burke, senior vice president, director of marketing at Hill, Holliday/Altschiller, New York, has joined DDB Needham here as management supervisor on the James River Corp. account. Burke, who handled new business for Hill, Holliday, will not be replaced. Her duties will be shared by three senior executives: Chuck Kushell, shop president, Jeri Dack, senior vice president, director of media and consumer planning, and Lamar LeMont, senior vice president of client services. Separately, two executives from
Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, Boston, have joined the New York office. David Ward, senior vice president, director of strategic planning, comes in ‘on loan’ from New England. Blake Olsen, a senior vice president, management supervisor, arrives as a senior vice president, group director.
Poppe Tyson Names New CEO
NEW YORK–Poppe Tyson has appointed Kevin C. Clark president and chief executive officer. He will succeed current chief executive officer, Fergus O’Daly, who will retain his chairmanship. Clark joins Poppe Tyson from Cross Country Staffing, a professional healthcare placement firm, which he co-founded. Clark served as chairman of Cross Country Staffing until August 1996.
Ammirati Adds to Planning, Research Staffs
NEW YORK–Ammirati Puris Lintas here has announced two promotions and a hire as part of an expansion of its planning and research department. Cheryl Bailey has been promoted to executive director of planning and research from executive vice president and managing director. In addition, two executives have been named to the newly created positions of executive vice president, managing director: Patricia Berry, formerly a senior vice president, group director of planning and research at Ammirati; and Stuart Hazlewood, who joins Ammirati from DDB Needham, New York, where he was senior vice president, group planning director.
H€agen-Dazs U.K. Goes to Euro RSCG
NEW YORK–H€agen-Dazs has awarded its estimated $18 million pan-European account to Euro RSCG Wnek Goesper in London, which beat out other co-finalist Young & Rubicam. Bartle Bogle Hegarty, the incumbent, resigned the account in February.
Merkley Taps Coca-Cola Executive
NEW YORK–Merkley Newman Harty has hired Coca-Cola media executive Kayne Lanahan to become its media director beginning today. She fills the position vacated by Erica Gruen, who left the agency a year ago to become president of the TV Food Network. Lanahan most recently held the post of director, North America media at Coca-Cola.
Comedian Jon Stewart has signed on to host the 1997 One Show May 21 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. . .Harris Drury Cohen of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., won the $15 million Celebrity Cruises account last week, beating out Loeffler Ketchum Mountjoy, Charlotte, N.C. . . Cyrk, a promotional products company in Gloucester, Mass., has signed an agreement to purchase Simon Marketing of Los Angeles, which specializes in creating youth marketing programs. . .Equity Toys, a Beverly Hills, Calif., toy manufacturer, has launched a search for an agency to handle its $3-5 million advertising account. . . Kmart Corp. selected Don Coleman Advertising in Southfield, Mich., as its agency for African American advertising, an estimated $5 million account. Burrell Advertising, Chicago, resigned the business a year ago. . .Harley-Davison Motor Co., Milwaukee, named Wunderman Cato Johnson in Chicago its agency for promotions and relationship management. Carmichael Lynch, Minneapolis, is its advertising agency of record.
