Newsletter to Offer Pay Service

NEW YORK — Technologic Partners will begin offering a subscription-only version of its VentureWire e-mail newsletter in the next few weeks, making it the latest online publisher to explore charging for once-free content.

VentureWire Professional, as the new service is to be called, will provide in-depth articles and analysis on venture-capital funding news and issues that previously ran in the free VentureWire newsletter, according to Brian O’Connell, publisher of VentureWire. VentureWire Professional subscribers also will get access to a database of about 23,000 archived stories.

VentureWire Professional will cost $495 a year, according to Mr. O’Connell, and is set to launch “in the next few weeks.”

Closely held Technologic will continue to offer a free newsletter, to be called VentureWire Alert, which will offer shorter stories and headlines focusing on the day’s venture-funding news. The publishing and conferences company also recently launched the free VentureWire People e-mail newsletter, which tracks management changes at venture-backed companies and venture-capital firms. VentureWire has 140,000 subscribers.

As online-advertising revenue has fallen sharply, many Web publishers have looked to charge for content. Financial site TheStreet.com Inc. has always charged for a portion of its content, while other publishers like Salon Media Group Inc. have recently expanded into premium content. Salon said Thursday that it has signed up 10,000 subscribers to its $30-a-year premium service since the end of April.

At Technologic, “This is a continuation of the strategy that’s always been in place,” Mr. O’Connell said.
