A New York Moment

}When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you, the song goes, and so it goes with Jonathan Cranin, recently promoted to chief creative officer for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at McCann-Erickson.

Cranin, who helped craft the “Priceless” campaign for MasterCard, was lunching last week at Patroon, the agency hangout on E. 46th St. Restaurant staffers were congratulating him left and right. After munching Cobb salad, Cranin chatted with Shoptalk and puffed on an Avo cigar. “Boy, that cigar smells good!” one patron exclaimed. “I’ll buy ya one!” Cranin responded, wheeling around to see none other than ex-New York Sen. Al D’Amato.

“Great!” chirped Al, grabbing Cranin in a headlock. “Look at this handsome young man,” he kvelled, tousling Cranin’s hair. Such chums! D’Amato continued greeting other diners without taking Cranin up on his offer. “You know Al D’Amato?” we asked. “Nope,” he said with a shrug.

Lunch for two at Patroon: $126. A close encounter of the New York kind: Priceless. CORBISJAMAL WILSON/NEWSCOM
