NBA SVP Heads to Charlotte Bobcats

NEW YORK The NBA has confirmed that Greg Economou, who this past April was named the league’s senior vice president of marketing and communications, is leaving to become evp and CMO at Charlotte Bobcats Sports & Entertainment.

Economou will oversee marketing and sales operations for the Bobcats, the WNBA’s Charlotte Sting and the teams’ arena. The move becomes effective Sept. 25. The NBA said it would look for a replacement, ideally before the season begins in October, but “has not set a timetable for that to happen,” according to a league official.

Prior to joining the NBA, Economou was managing director of Brandthink, a Huntersville, N.C.-based sports marketing firm, where he worked with the NBA, MLB and Nascar.

Economou is the second top marketing executive to leave a professional league this month. Michael LaBroad will not be returning this season as CMO of the NHL [Brandweek.com, Aug. 24].

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime,” Economou said. “I am delighted to be staying in the NBA family and look forward to helping the Bobcats organization achieve the kind of success I know is possible.” Michael Jordan is part owner of the Bobcats and the team’s managing member of operations.
