MoveOn Ad Challenges Bush on Iraq

WASHINGTON, D.C. The liberal political interest group will air an ad Wednesday accusing President George W. Bush of using the Sept. 11 attacks against America as an excuse to invade Iraq.

The 30-second spot will air nationally on CNN through Saturday, and is designed to coincide with the testimony of National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice before the 9/11 Commission, scheduled to take place Thursday. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney will also appear before the commission at a separate session.

In the spot, a narrator immitating Bush’s voice tells the commission what thinks he should say. “Before 9/11 I was obsessed with Iraq. Then I used 9/11 as an excuse to invade Iraq. So now we’re less safe than we were before.”

Then the ad cuts to a shot of Richard Clarke, the former White House counter-terrorism chief, testifying before the commission. The spot closes with onscreen text that reads: “George Bush: A Failure of Leadership.”

“We are not going to release an ad, and we are not going to respond to the bitter partisan attacks,” said Sharon Castillo, a Bush campaign representative, of the MoveOn effort.
