R.J. Kolar Advertising in Austin hired proofreader and copy editor Amy Protas, formerly a technical writer at Craft & Miertschin in Houston. The company also promoted traffic manager Jennifer Gorski to account coordinator on its Dell Computer business.
Daisytek International, a wholesale distributor of computer and office supplies and accessories in Plano, appointed Scott Maentz vice president of marketing. Maentz joins the company from Tech Data Corp. in Clearwater, Fla., where he was vice president of software product marketing.
Bozell Kamstra named Grant Belaire assistant account executive at its Austin office, where he will handle duties for IXC Communications and 3M. Belaire was an account coordinator at TateAustin.
Taylor Speier Group, Houston, promoted creative services director Lynn Weatherly and planning director Leanne Welling to vice presidencies. Weatherly has been at the agency for nine years, and Welling is a six-year veteran.
The Dallas Morning News, Dallas, installed Ric Lutz as vice president of information technology.
John Sousa was brought aboard as manager of external communications at Dynegy, Houston. He previously was vice president and management supervisor for Bates Churchill Public Relations, also in Houston.
Michael & Partners, Dallas, named Heather Roberts to an account executive post at the shop, where she will handle assignments for Lexington Services and Medi-Cell Laboratories. She arrives from Le Jardin European Spa, Englewood, Colo., where she was director of marketing and public relations.
Temerlin McClain, head-quartered in Irving, promoted Chris Armstrong to senior account executive and Christina Gonzales and Martha Tyler account executives.
Tandy Corp., Fort Worth, designated Laura Moore vice president of public relations and corporate communications. Moore previously served as vice president of corporate communications at Zale Corp., located in Dallas.
The Forbes Group, Dallas, advanced account planner Kristen Brosey to account service director, in charge of duties on the Pizza Hut account. She has been with the agency since 1995.
Bustin & Co., Dallas, assigned Charles Bauer to its government, legal affairs and crisis management unit. He previously served as deputy chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Dallas.
Marlee Sikes is a new account executive at the Houston office of Ogilvy & Mather. Sikes will work on the Shell aviation, industrial and upstream oil division accounts at the agency.
Fogarty Klein & Partners, Houston, hired senior account executive Brenda Christmon, formerly account supervisor at Bates Southwest; assistant account manager Kacey White, previously production coordinator at Marrot Communications; new business coordinator Lezlie Mahan from San Luis Resort; and account manager Debbie Shirley, who was a senior account specialist at ADVO.
Brierley & Partners, Dallas, tapped Patty Stone as senior vice president of human resources and administration. Stone previously held a human resources post with Mary Kay Inc., Dallas.
Griffith Phillips Creative, Dallas, elevated senior art director Tony Stubbs to creative director after more than five years at the agency. The shop also promoted account executive Ashlee Van Blarcom to account supervisor. Van Blarcom has been with Griffith for more than a year.
Hothaus Design, Dallas, added executive producer Crystal Smith Androvett. She was creative services director at WLS-TV, Channel 7, Chicago, and also was employed as a promotion director at KXAS-TV, Channel 5, Dallas.
The Wall Street Journal recently appointed Phyllis Cole to its national display advertising sales staff in Dallas. Cole, formerly with D Magazine, will handle accounts in both Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Kelly Jones recently joined The Balcom Agency in Fort Worth as production manager. She was formerly print production manager with Siboney USA in Dallas and worked at Ultrak Inc. in Carrollton.
Marie Whitfeld progressed to print production manager at Regian & Wilson Advertising & Public Relations, located in Fort Worth. The former assistant print production manager has been with the agency for seven years.
Major League Soccer franchise Dallas Burn recently promoted three staff members in its sales and marketing units. Sales director John Alper was elevated to vice president of sales; Andy Swift moved up from director of Hispanic marketing and community development to vice president of marketing and broadcasting; and account executive Shawn McGee shifted to director of sales.
Lyrick Studios, Richardson, recently appointed Mary Schuetz marketing manager of its Lyrick Publishing division. Shuetz was previously employed as director of book marketing and book buying for Handleman Co./National Book Distributors. Also at Lyrick, Debra Ebel was hired as director of licensing from her post as intellectual property director at the American Heart Association.

Alltell, based in Little Rock, appointed I. Barry Goldberg managing director of its enterprise relationship management solutions organization. Goldberg, who has more than 20 years experience as a sales and marketing strategist, is the founding partner of Matterhorn Consulting Services. He also has served as vice president of sales and marketing for Krames Communications.
NEW MEXICO
Rick Johnson & Co., Albuquerque, hired account executive Laurie Stout and account coordinator Sarah Biondi and assigned them to its new full-service tourism division. Stout was formerly domestic marketing manager at the Missouri state tourism office. Biondi is a graduate of George Washington University.
