May to Direct A&L Media: S.F. Agency Strengthens Planning, Buying Ranks




SAN FRANCISCO-Anderson & Lembke’s rapidly growing office here has added Alan May as media director. Since April, the agency has hired more than 30 employees to help service $50-60 million in new business from accounts such as Tektronix, AST Computers and Candle.
May was formerly group media director at GSD&M in Austin, Texas, where he worked with clients such as MasterCard, Haggar and the Houston Rockets. His account experience also includes Compaq, Makers Mark Bourbon and Shell Oil.
As A&L’s media director, May will oversee all media planning and buying for the agency’s San Francisco office and will report to president Mike Windsor. May and Windsor previously worked together at Ogilvy & Mather in Houston.
“I have the utmost respect for Mike Windsor and am very excited at the opportunity to work closely with him again,” said May. “A&L has an incredible future and I’m looking forward to being a part of their dynamic team.”
May was hired to replace David Yoder, who was recently promoted to executive media director of A&L. Yoder’s new and expanded responsibilities will include determining how Internet and traditional advertising can be integrated effectively. A&L has a strong interest in Web advertising due to its current interactive projects from Microsoft, agency executives have said.
In a related personnel move, Ellen Comley, former director of target planning at Miller/Kadanoff/Huber in San Francisco, will join A&L in early July as the agency’s new group media director. Comley will report directly to May.
