BOSTON-Eight agencies have moved forward in the review for the creative portion of Bay Networks $10-12 million advertising account.
Advancing last week following preliminary talks with the client were Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos and Partners & Simons, both in Boston; Long Haymes Carr, Winston-Salem, N.C.; Hanft Byrne Raboy Abrams, Mezzina/Brown and Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, all in New York; and Amazon Advertising and Foote, Cone & Belding, both in San Francisco, according to Mike Marsak of Effective Marketing Strategies, the Marina del Rey, Calif., consulting company overseeing the review.
Several shops named to the initial list of contenders [Adweek, Aug. 11] either withdrew from the process or were informed by client officials that they were not right for the account, agency representatives said.
Several last-minute additions were made to the original list after some shops pulled out, sources said. Among those out of contention are: Ingalls Advertising, Boston; Ander-son & Lembke, San Francisco; Mendelsohn/Zien, Los Angeles; Campbell-Ewald, Warren, Mich.; The Martin Agency, Richmond, Va.; and Hampel/Stefanides, New York.
The remaining agencies will meet again with client officials early next month. It was unclear whether another cut will be made, or if the review will proceed to its conclusion around Oct. 1 with all eight shops remaining in contention.
Marsak last week described the eight contenders as finalists. Jeff Brooks, vice president of brand management at the Santa Clara, Calif.-based firm, had previously said the company planned to name four to six finalists [Adweek, Aug. 11]. Brooks did not return calls by press time last week.
Bay Networks parted ways with creative incumbent Euro RSCG Dahlin Smith White in Salt Lake City this spring.
Media, now at Freeman Associates in Wellesley, Mass., is being reviewed separately. DeWitt Media in New York, ICG in Chicago and Western International Media in Boston are battling the incumbent.
