Lifetime Goes For Three

Lifetime Television says it will launch a third network this summer, Lifetime Real Women.

The 24-hour channel will focus on reality-based programs involving women – for example, Lifetime’s new nonfiction series Women Docs. Unveiled Tuesday at Lifetime’s upfront presentation in New York, Women Docs follows female medics, from interns to seasoned surgeons, around hospitals throughout the country.

The first installment tells four stories from New York’s St. Vincent’s Hospital where, over a 48-hour period, a premature baby fights for life, a woman preps for reconstructive surgery after breast cancer, a pregnant woman goes into early labor and surgeons perform an emergency heart bypass. The show premieres in August on Lifetime Saturdays in prime time and also runs on Lifetime Real Women.

Lifetime Real Women “is a natural extension of our brand,” and the decision to start it was made after Lifetime Movie Network “took off beyond our expectations,” said Louise Henry Bryson, Lifetime’s executive vp distribution and business. Launched in 1998, Lifetime Movie Network generates a 0.6 rating in its universe of 14 million subscribers.

Lifetime Real Women will be available for both analog and digital distribution.
