KSV Opens in Boston

BOSTON In a move that harkens back to the 1990s, when regional independents frequently expanded into new markets seeking opportunities to grow, Kelliher Samets Volk has tapped a trio of agency veterans to launch an outpost in Boston.

Based in Burlinton, Vt., with a satellite office in New York, KSV ranks among New England’s largest and more successful independent shops. KSV opens here with a pair of clients—Arbella Insurance and First Night Boston—under the direction of Spencer Deadrick, Doug Chapman and Kim Borman.

Borman, a former account service executive at Arnold and Toth Brand Imaging, becomes managing partner. Deadrick, a former evp, gcd at Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, and Doug Chapman, a former vp, cd at Hill, Holliday and a longtime cd at Allen & Gerritsen, will serve as ecds and partners.

“We’re providing something that has become very hard to find in New England—top talent operating in a nimble, digital world with full-service opportunities, but without the overhead and layers of a larger agency,” said Borman.

“Spencer, Doug and Kim bring overflowing energy and great ideas to help our clients grow their businesses,” added Yoram Samets, principal and managing director of KSV.

The agency launched 30 years ago and employs more than 70 staffers overall.

This marks the second notable Boston launch in less than a month. Chris Colbert, formerly managing partner at consultancy Pile and Co. and a seasoned agency leader, in May opened Holland Mark, reviving the name of the independent shop he helped guide a decade ago.

Local startups have fared somewhat better in recent years than outposts. The Barbarian Group, Modernista! and MMB, all launched since the decade began, have met with considerable success and played on the national stage. New York’s Deutsch attempted a Boston office using local managers, but that venture failed to gain any real traction.

Kathy Kiely, one of the execs who helmed that Deutsch office and who now serves as president of Boston’s Ad Club, said, “There are a lot of clients out there who are at a size where they are afraid of being swallowed up in a large agency, but would feel Vermont is too far away—so this could be a nice solution. KSV gives them the stability a startup might lack.”
