Kolb to COO of WorldGroup’s Momentum

McCann-Erickson WorldGroup CEO Jim Heekin has promoted Bill Kolb to chief operating officer of Momentum, WorldGroup’s global promotional-marketing company, the agency confirmed.

Kolb, 39, most recently was CEO of WorldGroup’s In-Store Marketing Services Group, which became part of Momentum in late 2001. He will lead the shop, replacing Momentum CEO Harlan Stone, who left the position two weeks ago to join Veloc ity Sport and Entertainment in Greenwich, Conn.

Kolb’s role is more of an operational one in which he will seek to better manage Momentum’s expanded integration capabilities, according to a WorldGroup representative. There are no immediate plans to name a CEO, said the rep.

Kolb and Chris Weil, regional director of Momentum Europe/Middle East/Af rica, are splitting some of Stone’s responsibilities as WorldGroup prepares for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, and the 2008 games in Beijing with a new dedicated Olympics-marketing unit called 05.

Kolb, who is based in New York, reports to Heekin. Weil, 37, is based in London; he reports to Kolb.

Prior to joining WorldGroup’s In-Store Marketing Services Group in 2001, Kolb was president of in-store product-placement and display-design agency International Marketing Services in New York. There, he worked on accounts such as French mass-merchandising chain Carrefour.

Formed in May, 05 is headed by co-managing directors Bob Heussner, based in Detroit, and Gary Pluchino in New York, both of whom report to Weil. Kolb described 05 as “the only agency solely focused on Olympics marketing.” New York-based 05 combines service offerings from Interpublic Group companies such as McCann-Erickson Worldwide, Momentum, FutureBrand, MRM Partners and Weber Shandwick.

WorldGroup launched Momentum in 1995 as a small promotional-marketing company. It has grown to $1.3 billion in billings; the company’s biggest clients are American Express Blue card, Coca-Cola and General Motors.
