JWT’s Maedel Heads to Singapore

NEW YORK JWT worldwide president Michael Maedel is relocating from the agency’s London office to Singapore, effective next month, the WPP Group shop said.

In a related move, Toby Hoare, executive chairman for JWT U.K., will add oversight of all European operations, effective Jan. 1. Maedel previously oversaw that region.

Maedel’s move is designed to capitalize on growth opportunities in the Asian market, according to JWT. In addition to client development, he will explore potential acquisitions.

“It is our fastest growing region by far,” Maedel said, in a statement. “And given what is going on in Asia, our clients and our agency must be represented at the highest possible level to take advantage of the opportunities.”

Maedel became worldwide president in early 2004, when then North American president Bob Jeffrey rose to worldwide CEO. Previously, Maedel was president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Hoare rose to U.K. executive chairman in late 2005, after serving as WPP’s top executive on its global HSBC marketing services account. In his U.K. role, he oversees JWT in London, CheethamBell JWT in Manchester, direct marketing shop RMG Connect in London, brand consultancy Everystone in London and DDFH&B Group in Ireland.

Hoare also serves on JWT’s global executive committee, which comprises nearly 20 top executives from around the world.
