J.P. Morgan Chase Contacts Agencies

NEW YORK J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. is reaching out to agencies for its consumer account. The move comes months before the banking titan is expected to acquire Bank One, sources said.

Sources have said the RFI, distributed on Monday, is unclear about the scope of the assignment. Duties may include all advertising for the merged entity, or simply an assignment that will focus on aiding the transition from Bank One to Chase.

Bank One’s creative agency is Gardner Nelson & Partners, a New York independent, which works with Aegis’ Carat on media. It is by far their biggest client, representing nearly $100 million in billings.

J.P. Morgan Chase’s media agency is Interpublic Group’s Foote Cone & Belding in New York; sibling Martin Agency in Richmond, Va., handles retail creative.

Chase spent nearly $40 million on ads last year, and Bank One spent about $150 million, according to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR.

Agencies either could not be reached or referred calls to the client, which declined comment.
