IQ News: JamTV Sings New

JamTV, Chicago, relaunches today as the universal music hub, taking its new name from the Berkeley, Calif. company it acquired in June of 1998. The three JamTV properties, Rolling Stone Network, and Down Beat Jazz will keep their identities as part of the new hub, which features a total of 35 genres.
Users can search through nearly a million song clips, 1,000 videos, artist Web sites, concert photos and live and archived Webcasts. They’ll be able to buy CDs, tickets and merchandise from commerce partners including and CDnow.
To help sort it all out, the site offers personalization and filtering. “After you’ve spent one session on site, it will say, ‘Hi! You looked at this category the last time you were here. This is what other people interested in this category are looking at,” explained Jo Sager, the site’s vice president, marketing.
Mark Hardie, senior analyst at Cambridge, Mass.-based Forrester Research, says benefits of the rollup outweigh possible dilution of individual titles. “They had three brands that were relatively diluted so I think putting them under one banner is a strong strategic move.” will offer advertisers targeting based on musical tastes, and work with record companies; it is also able to deliver songs in the MP3 format.
“Because of the relationships we’ve built with labels, they see us as a marketing platform,” Sager said.
