Ben & Jerry’s Contenders Start to Emerge

BOSTON—Ben & Jerry’s is mulling at least four contenders in the review for its $5-10 million ad account, sources said. In the pitch are Cliff Freeman and Partners and Bozell, both of New York, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Miami, and incumbent Fitch, Ann Arbor, Mich., according to sources. Another incumbent, Black Rocket Euro RSCG, San Francisco, and one additional undisclosed shop may also be pitching, sources said. The South Burlington, Vt., client could not be reached; consultants with New York’s AAR Group, which is running the review, declined to comment.

PwC Consulting Moving Account to Ogilvy

NEW YORK-—As IBM waits for the close of its $3.5 billion purchase of the consulting arm of Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Big Blue is already making moves to shift the advertising for the PwC unit to Ogilvy & Mather, New York, sources said. Interpublic Group’s Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos and McCann-Erickson, both New York, have shared the estimated $90 million account. The consulting group will be housed in IBM’s global services unit, which has become the most profitable part of IBM. While the need for hardware has decreased, demand has soared for experts who understand Web sites, software integration, data storage and servers—issues that have increasingly become part of IBM’s advertising. IBM and Ogilvy declined comment.

Contenders Prep Creative, Media for Avaya

BOSTON—The agencies pitching the $30 million account of communications systems provider Avaya are preparing to present creative and media capabilities to the Basking Ridge, N.J., client over the next two weeks. The company is considering Bates Technology Group in Atlanta; DDB, Doremus and McCann-Erickson, all New York; Arnold, Boston; and Mullen, Wenham, Mass., sources said. The media de partments or media affiliates of those agencies will also present, sources said. The client has not confirmed the identities of the contenders, but has said that incumbent Foote, Cone & Belding, San Francisco, will not keep creative, though FCB, New York, and Interpublic Group sibling Initiative Media are contenders for planning and buying. A cut to finalists will come at month’s end.

Four TV spots, created by the agency in Wenham, Mass., begin breaking in the Northeast this week during family-friendly programming. The budget for the Quincy, Mass., supermarket chain is $7-10 million. The work continues the long-running tagline “All the ingredients,” adding a secondary tag: “You take care of your family. Let Stop & Shop take care of you.” … Duracell, a unit of Boston-based Gillette, last week unveiled its first work from newly hired agency Acme Idea Co., Norwalk, Conn., introducing the tagline “Trusted everywhere” in a trio of TV spots that show the batteries used in commonplace situations to underscore their reliability and forge an emotional tie with consumer. … The Richards Group of Dallas has been awarded the $1 million account of W.R.
