BT, Boston Beer Reverberate for MMB

BOSTON—McCarthy Mambro Bertino’s loss last week of the creative portion of Boston Beer’s estimated $20-30 million account was softened by the addition of some $5 million in ad chores for British Telecom, which named the shop to promote its teleconferencing, Web conferencing and related services. Boston Beer moved its creative account to New York boutique Big Chair; MMB of Boston had participated in the review. The Boston brewer’s media assignment, which had been with New York’s MediaCom, remains in play, with six agencies emerging as contenders. Carat, Initiative Media, Zenith Media, Media First, The Media Edge and MindShare, all New York, are pitching, sources said.

Hill, Holliday Lands Red Roof Inns

SAN FRANCISCO—Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos has added the $10-15 million account of Red Roof Inns. Hill, Holiday’s San Francisco office bested TBWA/Chiat/Day, Playa del Rey, Calif., Cramer-Krasselt, Chicago, and De Vito/Verdi, New York, in the creative pitch. Red Roof Inns’ incumbent, The Richards Group, Dallas, retains media chores. Headquartered in Dallas, Red Roof has more than 330 properties and employs about 6,000 people.

Converse Retains Duffy Design

CHICAGO—Converse tapped Duffy Design, a Fallon subsidiary, for a comprehensive overhaul of the North Reading, Mass., company’s brand. Duffy will be asked to make the brand “relevant to today’s youth culture,” the com pany said in a release. Financial details of the assignment were not disclosed. Converse’s last known agencies were Arnold in Boston and Pyro Brand Development in Dallas. The company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year and had been absorbed by Footwear Acquisition.

Hill, Holliday Pulls Execution for Edison Light

BOSTON—The terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 have prompted Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos to pull a poster it crafted for the New England rollout of Edison Light Beer, a lager launched by New Century Brewing. The poster features a graphic of the new beer’s bottle and a picture of brewmaster Joe Owades, who developed the recipe for Edison Light. The text, prepared before Sept. 11, reads: “Maybe now our nation can move beyond the tragedy of the wine cooler.” Others, with headlines such as “Secret ingredient in our beer: beer” and “One man’s invention is another man’s happy hour,” will run as planned in liquor stores and pubs in the Boston area. The tag is “Light beer, reinvented.” Hill, Holliday is also handling media and PR chores for Hingham, Mass.-based New Century, which was founded by former Boston Beer executive Rhonda Kallman.

Keiler Launches Alstom USA Print

BOSTON—Keiler & Co. has broken four print ads as part of its corporate branding campaign to build awareness of Alstom USA, specialist in energy and transport infrastructure systems. Efforts from the Farmington, Conn., agency feature graphics of cruise ships, high-speed trains, power stations and generating equipment. Ads read, “Alstom, the global specialist in energy and transport infrastructure.” Targeting business-to-business and government customers, the ads are running in The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek and elsewhere.
