Wieden Cuts Staff in North America

PORTLAND—Wieden+Kennedy has laid off 12 percent of staff in its Portland and New York offices, which have a combined staff of 320. “This would be less difficult if we didn’t value these people as much as we do,” said Dan Wieden, shop president. “But there are economic realities that have to be faced.”

$600 Mil. Philips Global Media Search Down to Two

LOS ANGELES—Initiative Media and Carat, both in London, will go head-to-head in the final round of Philips Electronics’ $600 million global media review. MindShare, OMD and Starcom MediaVest Group were the other contenders. A decision is expected by the end of the month.

Dell Nears Decision on $150 Million Account

NEW YORK—Four shops await a decision in Dell Computer Corp.’s $150 million account review after pitches last week, sources said. Dell may consolidate creative and media at one shop or name separate partners for those duties. Temerlin McClain in Irving, Texas, and Carat in New York pitched last Tuesday. DDB in Chicago and Lowe Lintas & Partners in New York went on Wednesday, said sources.

Schweitzer to Tap Jeffrey for North America Post

NEW YORK—Peter Schweitzer, worldwide CEO of J. Walter Thompson, will promote New York president Bob Jeffrey to president of North America—a role previously held by Schweitzer, sources said. Jeffrey, who became the top New York executive in 1998, will retain those duties and add the responsibility of overseeing JWT’s seven offices in the U.S. and Canada, said sources.

Havas to Acquire McKinney & Silver

ATLANTA—Havas on Friday reached an agreement to purchase McKinney & Silver. “There’s nothing official,” said Janet Northern, agency director of communications, but sources confirmed that Paris-based Havas successfully concluded negotiations with MarchFirst, the Raleigh, N.C., shop’s troubled parent. McKinney will remain a separate entity under the Havas umbrella. Still under discussion is whether McKinney will report directly to Havas or through Arnold.

AT&T Wireless this week is expected to narrow the field of shops competing for its $300-400 million account to four to five, sources said. … Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will likely name a new agency this month, the client confirmed. Finalists are McCann-Erickson and BBDO, both in New York, GSD&M in Austin, Texas, and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco. … A decision on the consolidation of the $45 million Energizer account could come this week, sources said. TBWA\Chiat\Day in Playa Del Rey, Calif., is lead shop for the brand; DDB in Chicago handles the e2 titanium-battery account. … Credit Suisse Group has awarded a $15-25 million global corporate-image assignment to Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper, sources said. The agency beat New York-based Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners in the final round. … Panasonic has put its estimated $10 million electric shavers’ account in review. Jordan McGrath Case & Partners Euro RSCG, Avrett Free Ginsberg and incumbent Warwick Baker O’Neill, all in New York, are contending, sources said.
