Aetna Narrows to 2 for $40 Mil. Account
ATLANTA—McKinney & Silver has advanced to the final round of Aetna/U.S. Healthcare’s $40 million review. The Raleigh, N.C.-based shop joins New York’s Grey in a final pitch at the insurer’s Hartford, Conn., headquarters this week. There is no incumbent. Waylon Ad, the St. Louis-based shop that handled projects for Aetna, and Saatchi & Saatchi in New York were cut late last month.
McCarthy Mambro Bertino Launches
BOSTON—Joe McCarthy, Jamie Mambro and Fred Bertino have formed McCarthy Mambro Bertino. The move had been expected [Adweek, March 26]. Bertino and Mambro had been principals in the Boston office of Dallas-based Square One for about a year. McCarthy has run brand consultancy McCarthy Co. in Princeton, N.J., working primarily on Boston Beer Co.’s Samuel Adams brand. The new 10-person shop handles the $15-20 million Sam Adams business and the $5-10 million Tellium account, which had been Square One’s lone Boston client. Square One will no longer have a New England presence.
WPP Folds Ogilvy & Mather Atlanta Into Thompson
ATLANTA—WPP Group has shut down its Ogilvy & Mather office in Atlanta. The shop, established in 1980, will be merged into crosstown WPP sibling J. Walter Thompson. Ogilvy in Atlanta, which grew into a regional powerhouse, handling the Centers for Disease Control, Food Lion and Shoney’s accounts, went into a downward spiral after director of client services John Ames and media director Tony O’Haire left in 1996. The two formed Ames Scullin O’Haire and won the Food Lion account last year.
Olympus Cuts to 7 in Race for $15 Mil. Business
NEW YORK—Seven shops remain in the running for Olympus’ estimated $15 million account: Gotham, Merkley Newman Harty, Hampel/Stefanides, Margeotes|Fertitta + Partners and TBWA\Chiat\Day, all in New York; Mullen in Wenham, Mass.; and The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va. Eliminated were DiNoto Lee, Bozell, Wieden + Kennedy, D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles and Ground Zero, all in New York, confirmed a client executive. Olympus is expected to cut to three this week. The review is being managed by Richard Roth Associates in Chappaqua, N.Y.
Y&R Bows More Jaguar Work
NEW YORK—A new spot for Jaguar’s XJ breaks this week, two weeks after Young & Rubicam bowed its first work, featuring the S-Type, for the client. The new spot mixes images of fast-moving Jaguars with simple screen copy and retains the tagline, “The art of performance.” Creative duties on the brand, previously split between Ogilvy & Mather in North America and J. Walter Thompson in Europe, were consolidated at Y&R earlier this year [Adweek, Feb. 12]. Global billings are estimated at more than $100 million. Media remains at MindShare.
Altschuler Steps Up at McCann
NEW YORK—Marjorie Altschuler was promoted to director of business development at McCann-Erickson WorldGroup, North America, and appointed to a seat on its board. Altschuler had been new business director at McCann-Erickson New York and North America. No immediate replacement has been determined.
Schwartz Promoted to Replace Topolewski
LOS ANGELES—TBWA\Chiat\Day has promoted Rob Schwartz to executive creative director. He replaces Gary Topolewski, who is leaving the Playa del Rey, Calif., agency to join Doner in Southfield, Mich., this spring [Adweek, March 26]. Schwartz, 35, previously served as worldwide creative director on Nissan.
Bush to Nominate Beers to Government Post
WASHINGTON—President Bush intends to nominate Charlotte Beers, former chairman of J. Walter Thompson, for the job of Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, the White House said. Secretary of State Colin Powell asked Beers to take the post [Adweek, March 12]. Beers’ JWT contract expired in February. Peter Schweitzer, worldwide CEO of JWT, informed staff of the nomination in a memo, stating, “Charlotte has our admiration and appreciation for what she has done for JWT.”
TBWA\Chiat\Day has promoted Richard Overall and Simon McQuoid to the title of creative director, creating three cds under executive creative directors Patrick O’Neill and Dallas Itzen. Overall, 36, is a writer, and McQuoid, 32, is an art director. The third cd is David Lowe. … Publicis in New York is contending for the $60 million New York State Lottery account, sources said, along with incumbent Grey, J. Walter Thompson, Bates, DDB, Wolf Group and McCann-Erickson, all in New York. … Three agencies have advanced in the review for Lockheed Martin’s $15 million account. Gray, Kirk/VanSant in Baltimore, Keiler & Co. in Farmington, Conn., and Cramer-Krasselt in Milwaukee will make creative pitches May 3, sources said. Achenbaum Bogda Associates is conducting the review. … Prodigy Communications has awarded its estimated $15-20 million account to GSD&M without a review. … Merkley Newman Harty this week breaks new work for Citigroup that employs images of recognizable icons, sources said. Six new TV spots retain Citigroup’s “Lead. By example” tagline, according to sources. The work will break during the Citigroup-sponsored Masters golf tournament. … BBDO and its U.S. digital marketing agency, @tmosphere, are considering a strategic alliance with Organic. “We have known and worked with Organic for several years and share significant client relations,” Allen Rosenshine, BBDO CEO, said in a statement. Shared clients include British Telecom, DaimlerChrysler, General Electric and Charles Schwab.
