IHOP Considers Media Replacement
LOS ANGELES–The International House of Pancakes is considering putting $10 million in media into review. The Glendale, Calif.-based restaurant chain is currently talking to its lead agency, Bozell Worldwide’s Costa Mesa, Calif., office, and a handful of media buying companies about taking on media duties for California and Texas markets. The move follows the retirement of one of the company’s longtime media buyers, Dex Lasky of Tuscon, Ariz., according to an IHOP representative. If the chain fails to select a replacement by March, a review will likely commence, sources said.
Smart & Final Launches Review
LOS ANGELES–Smart & Final has launched an agency review for its estimated $4 million account. Mike Marsak, president of Effective Marketing Strategies in Marina del Rey, Calif., is conducting the search on behalf of the Los Angeles-based warehouse grocery store chain. Agencies with existing offices in Southern California will be considered. The incumbent, Italia/Gal in Los Angeles, will not participate.
Accounts Roundup. . . Mendelsohn Rolls
BMW of North America has retained Mendelsohn/Zien Advertising as its agency for dealers in its 13-state Western region, following a review. The Los Angeles-based shop, which has handled the account for six years, prevailed over finalists dGWB, Irvine, Calif., and Kovel Kresser & Partners, Venice, Calif. Billings are nearly $19 million. . . Butler, Shine & Stern, Sausalito, Calif., has been awarded Jamba Juice Co.’s estimated $2.5 million account. Other contenders for the San Francisco-based juice bar chain’s business were Blazing Paradigm and Leagas Delaney, both in San Francisco; and WongDoody, Seattle. . . Startup agency Grant, Scott & Hurley, San Francisco, landed its first major client last week by winning the San Francisco Chronicle’s $1 million ad account.
Wickett Dies at 48
SAN FRANCISCO–John Wickett, president and chief executive of Winston Marketing and Communications in San Jose, Calif., died Dec. 21 from complications from lymphoma. He was 48. His wife, Patty Wickett, formerly senior vice president and marketing director, has taken over her husband’s position at the 26-year-old agency.
