IPG AND HILL, HOLLIDAY TALKS ARE ‘SERIOUS’
BOSTON-Interpublic Group of Cos. and Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos are in “serious negotiations,” but as of last week a buyout of the Boston shop by the New York-based holding company was still not imminent, according to sources close to Interpublic. Hill, Holliday chairman Jack Connors last week continued to deny that the agency he has owned and operated for 30 years is for sale [Adweek, Feb. 2].
IRMA MANN COMPETES FOR RESORT ACCOUNT
BOSTON-Plaza Hotels & Resorts is reviewing four agencies for its Atlantic and Grand Bahama Beach and Golf Resort property on the Bahama Islands, the client confirmed. Making presentations the week of March 2 are: Irma S. Mann, Strategic Marketing, Boston; Ryder & Schild, Miami; Yesawich, Pepperdine & Brown, Orlando, Fla.; and The Zimmerman Agency, Tallahassee, Fla. All four finalists have extensive tourism experience. Joe Gill, director of sales and marketing at Plaza Hotels & Resorts, said a decision will be made immediately following the last presentation. Billings were not disclosed, but sources estimated the budget at $2 million. Irma Mann president Gary Leopold did not return calls by press time. The 75-person agency specializes in hospitality and resort accounts, including tourism-related projects for the Bahamian government.
CAMPAIGN SAYS MAINE SURVIVED THE SNOW
BOSTON-The Maine Office of Tourism has fashioned a radio blitz in the Boston market designed to lure vacationers back to the state in the wake of the well-publicized ravages of severe winter weather. “Despite the ice storm and what viewers had seen on television, I wanted to reinforce Maine’s position as a premier winter vacation destination,” said Dann Lewis, the state’s tourism director. The radio campaign has been running in Boston since January, when the bad weather destroyed homes and roads and interrupted power and telephone service in much of northern New England. Gov. Angus King has also appeared on television in a public service announcement promoting winter sports in Maine. Swardlick Marketing Group in Portland, Maine, handles the state’s tourism account.
BEST OF BROADCASTING SIGNS OFF
BOSTON-After 17 years of honoring excellence in regional television, radio and interactive advertising, the Best of Broadcasting Awards, sponsored by the New England Broadcasting Association and Adweek, has been suspended. A decline in entries-from 1,100 in 1990 to slightly more than 500 last year-was cited by executive producer Paul McDermott as the primary reason for the award show’s cancellation.
