Pro Media Loses Pep Boys to Needham
CHICAGO–DDB Needham here has won Pep Boys-Manny, Moe & Jack’s $40 million account following a review that also included Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, and Bates USA, New York. Incumbent Cliff Freeman & Partners, New York, resigned the account. Needham also takes on media buying and planning chores for the Philadelphia-based auto service store, previously handled by Pro Media in Natick, Mass.
Cross Unveils Digital Notepad
BOSTON–The Cross Pen Computing Group, a division of A.T. Cross in Lincoln, R.I., last week introduced a $2.3 million print campaign for the CrossPad, a portable, digital notepad that uploads handwritten notes onto a personal computer. Boston-based Pagano Schenck & Kay is the client’s agency of record but only buys media for this division. Creative chores were handled by Ellenson Group in New York. Ads are running in BusinessWeek, Fortune, Time, PC World and Wired.
Arnold Steps to Plate for Fenway
BOSTON–To help save Boston landmark Fenway Park, Arnold Communications here has developed a pro bono advocacy campaign for the Save Fenway Park organization, in conjunction with the Boston Preservation Alliance. The effort includes television, radio and print executions as well as collateral materials. TV spots feature interviews with Yankee fans in New York on why the ballpark is special. Print ads focus on Fenway’s history.
New High-Tech PR Firm Forms
BOSTON–Dave Costello, the former public relations director of Digital Consulting Institute in Andover, Mass., has formed IT Media Group. The high-tech public relations specialist’s first client is DCI. IT Media employs a staff of eight and also is located in Andover, Mass.
Tobacco Ad Bill Sinks in the Ocean State
BOSTON–Legislation that would limit cigarette advertising in Rhode Island appears to be dead. Sen. Leo Blais, R-Coventry, who sponsored the bill, said a recommendation of approval by the Senate Health, Education and Welfare Committee stirred opposition from tobacco lobbyists. The bill was modeled on a Baltimore ordinance banning tobacco advertising within 1,000 feet of schools, playgrounds, child-care centers and other public places where children regularly meet.
Publicis/Bloom Breaks SNET Spots
NEW YORK– Five humorous TV commercials touting Southern New England Telecommunications’ Yellow Pages begin airing this week. Created by Publicis/Bloom in New York, the ads are the first for the New Haven, Conn.-based client’s phone directory in three years. Media Inc., New York, is the media buyer.
