For Mitsubishi Dealers, It’s Deutsch: 18, G/Z: 1
LOS ANGELES–Deutsch, New York and Santa Monica, Calif., continued its winning streak last week in Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America’s consolidated dealer review, beating Grey/Zimmerman for the estimated $10 million account of the car maker’s Midwest and several Southeast dealer groups. The wins, which followed previous victories in the Western U.S. and New York tri-state area, give Deutsch a total of 18 dealer markets nationwide. The agency’s new duties are for dealers in Chicago; St. Louis; Minneapolis; Cincinnati; Cleveland; Indianapolis; Columbus, Ohio; Charlotte, N.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; and Birmingham, Ala., a representative of the Cypress, Calif.-based client said. G/Z, New York, won the Atlanta dealer group, its first win since the contest began.
SGI Picks 4 Finalists for New Computer Line
LOS ANGELES–Silicon Graphics Inc. has chosen four finalists to compete for the estimated $40 million account of its new personal computer line [Adweek, Jan. 19]. Michael Markman, principal of Mountain View, Calif., consultancy Markman Associates, said the search has been narrowed to Grey Advertising here; McCann-Erickson, San Francisco; Arnold Communications, Boston; and CKS Partners, Cupertino, Calif., which handles SGI’s $20 million corporate business. The finalists were culled from about 10 shops nationwide.
TBWA Chiat/Day Gets Comcast Account
NEW YORK–TBWA Chiat/Day here has landed an estimated $15 million account from Comcast Cable Communications in Philadelphia. The client, with 4.4 million subscribers, is the fourth-largest cable system in the U.S. TBWA Chiat/Day will handle media planning, creative duties and some media buying chores, said Mary Maroun, agency managing director and president. Other shops contacted included Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, Wieden & Kennedy and DDB Needham, all in New York.
NEC Corporate Account in Review
NEW YORK–NEC USA in Melville, N.Y., is conducting a review involving four New York shops for its $6 million corporate advertising account. Ken Vedder, director of advertising at NEC, identified the contenders as Merkley Newman Harty, Anderson & Lembke, Marsteller Advertising and incumbent Hampel/Stefanides. According to Vedder, NEC’s agreement with Hampel/Stefanides called for a mandatory review in 1998. The process does not affect the estimated $50 million NEC Computer Systems account, which is also at Hampel/Stefanides, said Vedder.
Teligent Selects 2 Finalists
NEW YORK–Teligent has narrowed its agency search to two contenders: Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners in New York and W.B. Doner & Co. in Baltimore, with a final decision expected this week, sources said. Billings for the Vienna, Va.-based client are estimated at $5-10 million.
