BBDO Lands $100 Mil. Dell Account
NEW YORK–BBDO has won Dell Computer Corp.’s ad account, believed to be worth more than $100 million in billings. The New York shop takes over from J. Walter Thompson in Chicago, which handled the account since last December. Dell declined comment. Sources said BBDO will be responsible for creating a global integrated marketing campaign. JWT’s first work, tagged “Be direct,” began in June.
Saatchi Adds New General Mills Brand
NEW YORK–Saatchi & Saatchi has been awarded responsibility for the launch of General Mills¸’ Honey Nut Chex, the client confirmed. Campbell Mithun Esty in Minneapolis handles the rest of the Chex line. Saatchi here last week broke a 30-second TV spot that shows a straight-laced father and his “rock ‘n roll” daughter eating the cereal side by side at a kitchen table. The tagline: “Welcome to Generation Chex.” The client and Saatchi declined to discuss billings. Sources said billings are $12-15 million. Saatchi now handles more than 20 General Mills cereals.
Chief Executive of Y&R Europe Retires
NEW YORK–Fernan Montero, 50, chairman and chief executive of Young & Rubicam Europe in London since 1993, will retire this week, as expected. Montero’s successor is Bruno Widmer, 53, president of Advico Young & Rubicam in Zurich. Widmer will continue to work from the Zurich office. Montero, who had been with Y&R for 26 years, could not be reached. He will remain a consultant.
Fallon McElligott has joined the list of shops competing for the $80-100 million consolidated account of NationsBank and Bank of America, sources said. The Minneapolis agency declined comment. Other contenders are Bozell Worldwide, Lowe & Partners/SMS, Saatchi & Saatchi, all New York; Temerlin McClain, Irving, Texas; and Deutsch, New York and Marina del Rey, Calif. H.J. Heinz narrowed the review for its $150-200 million global ketchup account to Leo Burnett and TBWA Worldwide. Eliminated were roster networks Bates Worldwide, Euro RSCG and DDB Needham Dreyfus Corp., New York, is expected to pick an agency this week for its $30 million account. Finalists are New York shops Angotti, Thomas, Hedge, Grace & Rothschild and Partners & Shevack Allied Domecq has assigned the $12 million Kahlœa liqueur account to BBDO in Chicago, sources said. Incumbent Lois/EJL, Chicago, and Square One, Dallas, were the other finalists Russell Athletic, Atlanta, is in the early stages of a review for its estimated $5 million plus ad account, formerly with BBDO in New York. Russell officials said last week that the company had contacted 12 undisclosed shops CNS Inc., the Minneapolis marketer of Breathe Right nasal strips, selected hometown agency Campbell Mithun Esty for its $10 million ad account. Martin/Williams in Minneapolis resigned the business in August.
