Merkley Withdraws From Merchant’s Contest
DALLAS–Merkley Newman Harty, New York, has withdrawn from contention for the broadcast creative assignments of May Department Stores Co., St. Louis, sources said last week. Still in contention are The Richards Group, Dallas; W.B. Doner & Co., Southfield, Mich.; and N.W. Ayer & Partners, New York. Sources said Merkley executives originally believed branding would play a larger role. Officials at the agency declined to comment.
Mobil Hispanic Review Enters Second Phase
DALLAS–Mobil of Fairfax, Va., has tentatively scheduled an early November decision date in the estimated $5-10 million review for its Hispanic marketing account. Susan Carter, Mobil public affairs manager, said a client advertising committee and the New York office of consultant Jones-Lundin Associates are planning to hear presentations from an undisclosed number of shops in the next month. Not participating is incumbent Ornelas & Associates, Dallas. Carter previously said the company’s Hispanic work involves a mix of television, radio and print assignments for retail outlets and Mobil products.
GSD&M Introduces New TV Spot for PGA
DALLAS–Continuing its “These guys are good” series for the Professional Golfers Association Tour, GSD&M of Austin, Texas has released a new 30-second television spot featuring player John Daly. Like other ads which featured golfers Raymond Floyd and Phil Mickelson, Daly is shown performing his skill in another athletic setting–a baseball game. Daly hits a pitched golf ball out of the ballpark, causing Chicago White Sox first baseman Frank Thomas to exclaim, “These guys are good.” The spot will run during telecasts of golf tournaments and other sporting events.
Balfour Sports Contracts Austin’s MC2
DALLAS–Balfour Sports, Austin, Texas, has named MC2 of Austin to handle design and marketing duties. Responsibilities will include logo design and the development of product packaging, sales and co-op ad materials and retail displays. The agency will also create marketing materials for Balfour’s Championship Collection, targeting professional sports team owners and marketing staffs. Billings were undisclosed.
Burrell Joins Nationwide Insurance Roster
CHICAGO–Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, Ohio, hired Burrell Communications, Chicago, to handle creative development, media planning and public relations for the company’s urban marketing programs. No billings were disclosed. Temerlin McClain, Irving, Texas, remains Nationwide’s primary agency.
