Promus Awards Creative to TBWA Chiat/Day
DALLAS–Promus Hotel Corp. has awarded creative duties for its Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn and Doubletree chains to TBWA Chiat/Day, New York, representative Cathy Planchard confirmed. A decision on the media portion of the Memphis, Tenn., client’s estimated $40 million account had not been made by press time, but sources said Promus roster shop DDB Needham Dallas is likely to win those consolidated duties. Also competing in the final round of the review were Foote, Cone & Belding, Chicago, and Arnold Communications, Boston.
Burton Ad Set For European Debut
PARIS–Feature director Tim Burton will make his advertising debut next month in France with a 45-second commercial for Kraft Foods’ Hollywood Chewing Gum from Euro RSCG BETC in Paris. Burton, whose films include Mars Attacks!, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice, is bringing his stop-motion animation charm to an ad that explores the French obsession with garden gnomes, sources said. The spot, produced in Los Angeles last month by A Band Apart Commercials, Los Angeles, and Hamster Productions, Paris, cost more than $1 million, sources said. Ring of Fire, Los Angeles, is handling post-production efforts.
DDB Needham Wins Merck
NEW YORK–DDB Needham here has won Merck’s $20-30 million ad launch for Vioxx, a prescription acute pain medication, a client representative confirmed. Spending on the brand may run higher, sources said. DDB Needham bested New York shops Grey Advertising, Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG and Warwick Baker O’Neill for the account, which is scheduled to break next fall. ADvice & ADvisors here ran the search.
Suissa Miller, Carat Take Jenny Craig
LOS ANGELES–After a three-month review, weight-loss center chain Jenny Craig said it has retained Suissa Miller in Los Angeles as its creative agency, but moved the media duties on its estimated $40 million account to Carat ICG in Los Angeles. Western International Media had handled those chores. The other finalists for the La Jolla, Calif., company’s creative business were The Richards Group, Dallas and WongDoody, Santa Monica, Calif.
Gotham, New York, has left the $12 million American Family Publishers Sweepstakes review, sources said. Others believed to be vying for the Jersey City, N.J., company’s ad account: Berlin Cameron & Partners, DDB Needham, DeVito/Verdi, Mad Dogs & Englishmen and Partners & Shevack, all in New York; and The Communications Consulting Co. in Washington, D.C. Warwick Baker O’Neill has won the $12 million account of ESC Medical Systems, Needham, Mass., confirmed Alan Krinsky of ADvice & ADvisors, which handled the review. Warwick bested fellow New York finalists Gotham and Publicis as well as Quantum Consumer in Parsippany, N.J.
