L.L. Bean Awards Ad Business to Mullen
BOSTON–Mullen has been selected to handle the estimated $20-25 million advertising account of L.L. Bean. The Wenham, Mass., agency was chosen over finalists The Richards Group of Dallas and Carmichael Lynch of Minneapolis for the Freeport, Maine-based catalog retailer’s account. Incumbent Bronner Slosberg Humphrey of Boston declined to defend the business, but its Strategic Interactive Group retains online assignments for L.L. Bean.
DDB’s Chicago Office Stays in U S West Hunt
CHICAGO–DDB Needham here remains in contention for creative duties on U S West’s $40-50 million advertising account. The client has decided that the pending acquisition of telecom startup Level 3 Communication’s account by DDB Needham Dallas would not represent a conflict, a U S West representative said. Level 3 was still negotiating a contract with DDB Needham last week. Other finalists for U S West are Bozell Worldwide in Seattle and Campbell Mithun Esty and Martin/Williams, both in Minneapolis.
Thompson Wins San Antonio Water System
DALLAS–The Thompson Agency, San Antonio, was awarded a two-year, $1.2 million contract this month to market the San Antonio Water System, according to the shop. Thompson defeated four other local agencies, including incumbent KJS Marketing Communications Solutions, in a mandatory review. Thompson’s duties include television, radio and newspaper ad development and placement, plus collateral.
Sally Beauty Supply Signs Dieste & Partners
DALLAS–Dieste & Partners was hired to develop a Spanish-language campaign for retailer Sally Beauty Supply. The agency’s first assignment will include radio and television ads in Texas. Initial billings will be less than $1 million. Denton, Texas-based Sally Beauty Supply has 1,950 company-owned stores in 46 states and in Puerto Rico, Japan and the United Kingdom.
Bromley, Aguilar Comes to Aid of Boy Scouts
DALLAS–The Boy Scouts of America in Irving, Texas, enlisted Bromley, Aguilar & Associates to help boost its Hispanic membership. The San Antonio agency was selected after a review of four undisclosed shops, according to Phil Bevins, director of external communications for the client. Bevins said Bromley, Aguilar will primarily employ print and radio. The three-year initiative will include paid and donated media time. A budget is still being determined.
