Hadala, Ex-APL CEO, Sues IPG for $300 Mil.-Plus
NEW YORK–Former Ammirati Puris Lintas CEO Rick Hadala is suing APL and parent The Interpublic Group of Cos. for more than $300 million, claiming breach of contract and defamation, among other charges. The lawsuit, filed in state Supreme Court in Buffalo, N.Y., where Hadala resides, is in early phases of discovery, confirmed IPG general counsel Nick Camera. “We intend to vigorously defend” the suit, he said. “We believe we comply with our contractual obligations.” Hadala, who served seven months as CEO, was fired in April and was dissatisfied with his settlement package [Adweek, April 19].
2 Cruise Lines Put $70 Mil. in Play
ATLANTA–Celebrity Cruises and parent Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines are looking for agencies, sources said. Celebrity, which recently split with Harris Drury Cohen, has doubled its ad budget to $35 million, sources said. The line recently handed an $8-10 million marketing assignment to WestWayne in Miami. Royal, meanwhile, is considering incumbent McKinney & Silver, Raleigh, N.C.; Arnold Communications, Boston and Temerlin McClain, Irving, Texas, for its $33 million account, sources said. Royal is conducting a separate pitch for its $10 million direct marketing business. McKinney, Rapp Collins of Irving, Texas, and FCB Direct and OgilvyOne, both New York, are pitching that account, sources said.
Saatchi Picks Up $100 Mil. in Sony Work
NEW YORK–Saatchi & Saatchi has bested incumbent DDB Worldwide for creative duties on Sony’s pan-European estimated $100 million account. Earlier contenders included Young & Rubicam, BBDO Worldwide and J. Walter Thompson. Still vying for media duties are Zenith Media Worldwide and Omnicom Group’s Optimum Media Direction.
Bacardi Selects 2 Finalists in $20 Mil. Review
NEW YORK–Bacardi has made a cut in the creative review for its $20 million rum account, sources said. It is believed that Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, and Mezzina/Brown, New York, are the finalists. Eliminated shops include: New York shops Cliff Freeman and Partners; Berlin, Cameron & Partners; Warwick Baker O’Neill; and McCann-Erickson, which teamed with Amster Yard; as well as McKinney & Silver, Raleigh, N.C. The client did not return calls. DeWitt Media, here, is pitching for media duties.

The Emeryville, Calif.-based company’s new vp of corporate marketing, Pamela George, had worked with GMO while she was at Intel and Cisco. The account was formerly handled by Allen & Gerritsen, Watertown, Mass.
