Wrangler’s Creative Deadline Is This Week
ATLANTA – Agencies interested in pursuing the creative portion of Wrangler’s account have until this Thursday to signal the Greensboro, N.C.-based client. The jeans maker sent out approximately 35 requests for proposals two weeks ago. The account has been with The Martin Agency, Richmond, Va., for the last 10 years. Martin continues to handle the media portion of the business. According to Competitive Media Reporting, Wrangler spends nearly $30 million annually on advertising. The client split with Martin earlier this year over philosophical differences.
Bush Signs Bill to Exempt Ad Services
ATLANTA – Florida Gov. Jeb Bush last week signed into law industry-sponsored legislation exempting many advertising agency services from a state sales tax. The new law, which had been passed unanimously by both the State House and Senate, is expected to curtail the Florida Department of Revenue’s auditing of ad agencies’ tax records. Despite the 1987 repeal of a statewide services tax, the revenue department had been disallowing many ad agencies’ exemptions, forcing a series of successful but costly court appeals.
Vigo Assigns Soups to Harman/Hettig
ATLANTA – Harman/Hettig Marketing and Promotions in Clearwater, Fla., has been chosen agency of record by Vigo Importing Company of Tampa, Fla., without a review. The agency’s first assignment is to build brand awareness for Vigo’s line of Alessi Traditional Soups. Radio advertising will be produced and placed in Florida, New York, Boston and Chicago, followed by other regional markets.
Aussie CD Joins North Carolina Agency
ATLANTA – Rockett, Burkhead & Winslow has hired Steve Ulin as creative director and senior vice president. Ulin comes to the Raleigh, N.C., agency from Sydney, Australia, where he operated his own shop, Swift & Ulin.

Publicis Puts on Happy Faces for BMW
DALLAS – Publicis here is scheduled to break a 30-second regional television spot this month touting BMW of North America’s Z3 roadster. The ad’s computer-generated special effects have the driver (and the road she travels on) break out in smiles from the joy of driving the sports car. Billings were undisclosed. Publicis in Dallas and New York handles regional and dealer ads for BMW. Fallon McElligott in Minneapolis is the client’s lead agency.
