LOS ANGELES–DDB here has made mid-year staff reductions aimed at bringing expenses in line with targeted revenues, said agency president Dave Park. Ten mid- to low-level employees, including some account supervisors and several administrative staffers, were let go. Park attributed the cuts to “profit anemia” brought on by reduced spending from an unnamed client.

SAN FRANCISCO–The Secure Digital Music Initiative, a recording and electronics-industry trade group seeking to stem unauthorized copying and distribution of digitally recorded music, has hired Pentagram Design here to handle a portion of its marketing duties, sources said. Representatives of Pentagram and the SDMI declined comment.

Grey Advertising’s New York and San Francisco offices have won Oracle Corp.’s global ad account, valued at $90-100 million. The win of Oracle’s creative and media duties follows a three-month review that had been narrowed to Grey and Leo Burnett in Chicago. Think New Ideas, Los Angeles, which had handled the U.S. portion of the account, declined to defend the business. Global shop DDB, London, dropped out of the review. … Boeing has narrowed the list of contenders in its $30 million review to four finalists: Bozell and Publicis, both Seattle; McCann-Erickson in Los Angeles and Young & Rubicam in San Francisco, according to sources. Incumbent Cole & Weber, Seattle, and sister shop Ogilvy & Mather, New York, were cut earlier [Adweek, July 12]. D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles’ Los Angeles office was also eliminated. A decision is expected by next month. … E-commerce telecommunications Web site has awarded its estimated $6-8 million account to WongDoody, Santa Monica, Calif., after a review of Northern and Southern California shops. Los Angeles consultancy Select Resources International conducted the review on behalf of the San Jose, Calif., client. There was no incumbent. Formed last December, the company is backed by venture capital firm Information Technology Ventures and private investors. The site is expected to launch in the third quarter. Memorex, Santa Fe Springs, Calif., has selected Jefferson/Acker, Manhattan Beach, Calif., to handle ad and public relations duties after a review of undisclosed Los Angeles area shops.
