Sweet Music for Mullen: Taps Shop
BOSTON–Home electronics retailer Cambridge SoundWorks has hired Wenham, Mass.-based Mullen to create advertising for its revamped e-commerce Web site,, said agency president Joe Grimaldi. Billings are believed to be in the $7-10 million range. Mullen was chosen following a review that included Ingalls in Boston, which retains its status as lead branding shop for the Newton, Mass., client. Arnold Communications in Boston also talked to the client about the assignment but never made a formal presentation. Client officials could not be reached last week.
Hill, Holliday to Take AutoNation to Super Bowl
BOSTON–AutoNation USA in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., last week announced it had become a title sponsor of the National Football League and Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta. Agency of record Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos is expected to create the ads. The Boston shop is currently filming commercials featuring Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway, whose name is on AutoNation dealerships in that market.
Lids Hires Cone, Relaunches Ad Agency Search
BOSTON–Hat retailer Lids in Westford, Mass., has tapped Cone here for public relations chores and is relaunching its search for advertising assistance. The client split with Lane Advertising, Marblehead, Mass., earlier this year and reviewed undisclosed agencies about what was believed to be a $3-4 million account. No agency was chosen, but the company is once more evaluating contenders and hopes to hire one or more shops within 60 days, a Lids official said.
Times Co. Replaces Taylor With One of Its Own
BOSTON–With circulation and classified lineage falling at The Boston Globe, The New York Times Co. last week made its first seismic move since it bought New England’s largest daily newspaper six years ago. Richard H. Gilman, senior vice president of operations at The New York Times, was named to replace Benjamin B. Taylor as Globe publisher. The announcement was made by New York Times Co. chairman Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. Gilman’s appointment marks the first time since The Globe was founded in 1872 that a member of the Taylor family has not been publisher. Gilman joined The Times in 1983 as assistant to the vice president of circulation.
Tom Davis Misses Dassault
BOSTON–Dassault Systems of America, a computer systems firm in Woodland Hills, Calif., has hired Young Co. in Los Angeles for its estimated $5-10 million advertising account. Tom Davis + Co. in Lexington, Mass., was runner-up.
