Cole & Weber Among Casualties of Boeing Cut
LOS ANGELES–Boeing last week made a cut in the number of shops vying for its estimated $30 million account. Among the casualties were 25-year incumbent Cole & Weber, Seattle and Portland, Ore., and sister shop Ogilvy & Mather, New York, which had taken the lead on the pitch. Other shops eliminated were D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Los Angeles and New York, and Ammirati Puris Lintas, New York. Neither the Seattle client nor consultant Geduldig & Ferguson, New York, which is handling the review, would reveal the remaining contenders. Sources said the San Francisco offices of Young & Rubicam and J. Walter Thompson were still in, as was McCann-Erickson, Los Angeles.
LOS ANGELES–TBWA/Chiat/Day, Playa del Rey, Calif., has been named agency for record for, an online provider of merchant ratings and information to help shoppers buy goods on the Internet. The agency won the account after a review of five undisclosed shops. Billings for the Los Angeles-based client are estimated to be about $15 million. A fall campaign is planned.
Western to Dine on Applebee’s Media Duties
CHICAGO–Western Initiative Media Worldwide, Los Angeles, was named media planning and placement agency for Applebee’s International. The Overland Park, Kan.-based client also selected Foote, Cone & Belding’s Chicago office as the creative agency on the $35 million account. The other finalists were Campbell Mithun Esty, Minneapolis, and The Richards Group, Dallas.
DDB to Break FreshCare Campaign
SAN FRANCISCO–DDB here breaks a $10 million TV campaign this week promoting The Clorox Co.’s new FreshCare Fabric Refresher. The 30-second launch spot features a young woman who uses the product to get a cat smell out of her couch after an embarrassing first date. The tagline is, “FreshCare. A breath of fresh air.”
Rabuck, PPG Launching
LOS ANGELES–, a Web-based service that allows users to send and receive faxes free of charge, launches a multimillion-dollar media blitz today. The Rabuck Agency, Los Angeles, which specializes in branding and direct response marketing for Internet and traditional companies, is handling the creative. PPG Advertising, a full-service ad agency specializing in consumer work, direct marketing and media buying, is handling the media buy.
Condƒ Nast Unveils Guide Via Y&R Lincoln Ads
LOS ANGELES–Lincoln Mercury, with 14 custom-created ads from Young & Rubicam, Irvine, Calif., and San Francisco, is the sole sponsor of Condƒ Nast’s 44-page CitySource lifestyle/travel guide. Unveiled last week, CitySource will be mailed to 1.2 million Condƒ Nast subscribers fitting the new Lincoln LS sedan target demographic–buyers 35-49 considering their first luxury car.
