Herald Parent Buys Community Newspapers

BOSTON—Fidelity Capital, a unit of mutual funds giant Fidelity Investments, has reached an agreement to sell its Community Newspaper Co. holdings to Herald Media, parent of the Boston Herald, New England’s second-largest circulation daily newspaper. Terms were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close Nov. 1. Community Newspaper Co. publishes 88 weekly papers, four dailies, several shoppers and targeted specialty publications, and operates a Web unit, Town Online. The company’s publications have a combined circulation of about 900,000. The Herald’s daily circulation is 266,000. The Herald and The Boston Globe, a New York Times Co. property and the region’s No. 1 daily, have stepped up their competition for readers of late, each launching ad campaigns. The Herald, through Hill, Holliday, Connors Cosmopulos in Boston, has unveiled ads tagged, “Somebody’s got to say it.” Globe ads are tagged, “Designed to fit your life.” That effort, from Holland Mark Advertising in Boston, trumpets a recent redesign.

Havas, Snyder Deal is Complete

BOSTON—Havas Advertising last week completed its $2.1 billion stock purchase of Snyder Communications. Former Snyder unit Arnold Communications, Boston, helmed by CEO Ed Eskandarian, becomes lead agency in the global Havas Campus network. The French company’s other major network, Euro RSCG Worldwide, is based in New York. Havas stock began trading on the Nasdaq Exchange on Wednesday, opening at 17 5/16 and trading in the $15-17 range during its first few days. Havas reported a 39 percent jump in both first-half 2000 billings and gross income to $4.3 billion and $646 million, respectively, compared with 1999. Net profits for the first half improved 45 percent to $39.4 million.

Ideate Teams With for Ads

BOSTON— this week launches its first trade print campaign. Ads from the Newton, Mass., company show a series of stylish women, photographed in black and white, holding color photographs of beautiful homes. The copy reads, “She has dreams. She has ideas. She has money. She has style. She has no clue how to find you. Now, with HomePortfolio, you can make her design dreams and your business dreams a reality.” The tagline for the campaign is, “Where dreams become homes.” Ideate, Watertown, Mass., developed the inserts. Rick Colson, who was creative director for the campaign, took a more consumer approach to business-to-business advertising. A new consumer campaign will launch in February, created by Kirshenbaum & Bond, New York.

Glen Group Launches Online General Store

BOSTON—Glen Group, North Conway, N.H., has launched a Web site for crosstown client Zeb’s General Store, a company that has been selling products made exclusively in New England, such as specialty foods and penny candy, for 150 years. In addition to allowing customers to purchase products online, the site features Zeb’s events listings, a recipe club and a newsletter. Glen Group’s goal was to give the site the latest in e-commerce technology, while maintaining the flavor of the store.
