LOS ANGELES–Smith Public Relations here has been tapped to conduct an agency search for an undisclosed high-tech client, confirmed Smith president Steve Smith. The client is described as a startup marketing its low-price personal computers to families who do not own one. Billings are estimated at $12-15 million, said sources. “We have been in communication with several, primarily California agencies,” said Smith.
DMB&B to Handle GM Buy Power Rollout
LOS ANGELES–D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Los Angeles, has been assigned ad duties for the national rollout of General Motors’ Internet Buy Power program, to begin in early 1999. Billings are undisclosed. The shop handled last year’s Buy Power test program.

The California contenders are incumbent Big Imagination Group, Marina del Rey; Fotouhi Alonso, Los Angeles; Kovel Kresser & Partners, Venice; The M1 Agency, Santa Monica; VitroRobertson, San Diego; Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, San Francisco; and one undisclosed shop. The shop declined to defend when the client recently placed the account in review, said agency executives. Billings are estimated at under $5 million. … Eddie Bauer, Redmond, Wash., has selected Alcone Marketing Group in Irvine, Calif., to handle promotional marketing duties.
