AirTouch Launches Creative Review
SAN FRANCISCO–Wireless communications company AirTouch Cellular, Walnut Creek, Calif., is inviting agencies nationwide, including its six roster shops, to participate in a review for the creative portion of its estimated $100 million consolidated advertising account. A decision is expected by year’s end. Consulting firm Mitchell Madison Group here will conduct the review. The client is also holding a review for its consolidated media buying business, which is expected to go to Grey Advertising, New York, later this month.
A Retooling for Ronald McDonald?
CHICAGO–McDonald’s Corp. has approached non-roster shops here about a project involving an “image makeover” for chain icon Ronald McDonald, according to sources. A representative of the Oak Brook, Ill.-based chain said he was “unaware of plans to make any changes with Ronald’s image.” Roster shops include DDB Needham, Leo Burnett, Burrell Communications and Frankel & Co., all in Chicago.
E*Trade Names Interactive Shop
NEW YORK–E*Trade, Palo Alto, Calif., has named Modem Media.Poppe Tyson, San Francisco, its interactive agency of record. The shop will be assigned the task of managing a host of marketing alliances that the online brokerage recently cut with America Online, Yahoo! and Ziff-Davis’ ZDNet. The company has said that over the next 12-18 months, it intends to recruit 1 million new customers; it has apportioned $100 million to achieve this goal. E*Trade’s traditional agency, Gotham, New York, remains.
Progressive Insurance of Mayfield Village, Ohio, has named Arnell Group Brand Consulting, New York, to handle creative and media for its ad account, previously handled by Publicis & Hal Riney, Chicago. Billings were estimated at $30-40 million Thrifty Car Rental, in Tulsa, Okla., has selected six contenders in the review for its $10 million ad account: Bernstein-Rein Advertising, Kansas City, Mo.; Campbell-Ewald in Warren, Mich.; Cliff Freeman and Partners, New York; The Richards Group, Dallas; Temerlin McClain in Irving, Texas; and Yesawich, Pepperdine & Brown, Orlando, Fla. The London offices of Saatchi & Saatchi and Bates Dorland are finalists in the review for Allied Domecq’s Ballantine’s Scotch whisky McCann-Erickson, New York, will restage Boston Beer Co.’s flagship Samuel Adams brew in a fourth-quarter campaign after prevailing over sister agency Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos for creative, media buying and planning duties on the estimated $10-12 million account DDB Needham, New York, has been tapped to handle creative and media duties on the $3-5 million account of Amana Appliances in Amana, Iowa, following a three-month review. The account was last handled by Ingalls Advertising in Boston. DDB bested Foote, Cone & Belding, Chicago and Christy, Macdougall, Mitchell in New York.
