New Shops Emerge as SBC Media Contenders
DALLAS–Leo Burnett, Chicago, and DDB Needham’s Optimum Media, New York, last week were identified by sources as contenders for the combined media buying accounts of SBC Communications’ Southwestern Bell and Pacific Bell brands. The account is estimated at $200 million. Other previously identified shops still believed to be in contention include GSD&M, Austin, Texas, which handles creative for SBC’s wireless and Yellow Pages businesses, and TBS Media Management, New York, the incumbent on Pac Bell media. D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, St. Louis, the incumbent for SBC, is not participating.
Merkley Awarded Racing Association Account
ATLANTA–Merkley Newman Harty in New York was awarded the $12-15 million National Thoroughbred Racing Association account last week, said Jerry Brown of Brown & Martin Consulting in Atlanta. Merkley defeated three other shops for the business: BBDO South in Atlanta, The Richards Group in Dallas and D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Los Angeles.
Ryder TRS Picks 4 Agency Finalists
NEW YORK–Ryder TRS in Denver has selected four finalists for its $20 million ad account: Grey Advertising in New York, Fallon McElligott in Minneapolis and two Detroit agencies, Campbell-Ewald and D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles. Ogilvy & Mather here is the incumbent.
Ammirati Wins Montblanc Pens
NEW YORK–Ammirati Puris Lintas in Hamburg, Germany, has won the estimated $40 million global account of Montblanc pens. The account was previously handled by KNSK/BBDO, also in Hamburg.
TBWA Chiat/Day Splits With Tosco
NEW YORK–TBWA Chiat/Day split with client Tosco Marketing in Phoenix late Friday, said sources, leading to a possible review of the company’s estimated $5-8 million account. The agency’s Venice, Calif., office has handled ads for the Unocal chain of gas stations for several years. Tosco recently bought the Unocal chain, leading to the breakup of the relationship, said sources. Executives at the agency and client declined to comment.
Fallon Lands Weight Watchers Account
CHICAGO–Fallon McElligott, Minneapolis, has secured the $8-10 million account of Weight Watchers Frozen Foods following a review involving Arnold Communications, Boston; Bozell Worldwide, Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners and Partners & Shevack, all New York; and possibly others. The business had been at Lowe & Partners/SMS in New York on a project basis.
Reckitt Consolidates at McCann
NEW YORK–Reckitt & Colman is consolidating ad chores for its North American cleaning products at McCann-Erickson here, moving a number of brands with combined billings worth about $20 million, said the Montvale, N.J.-based client.
